Seyyed Abbas Salehi, Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, issued a message to commemorate the global recognition of the Mehregan Festival by UNESCO, describing it as a testament to the profound and enduring cultural heritage of Iran.
As reported by the Rokna website, the Minister’s message reads:
In the name of God, the compassionate and the merciful
The global inscription of the Mehregan Festival as an element of Iran’s intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage serves as a clear testament to the deep and enduring richness of Iran’s cultural identity. This cultural legacy transcends geographical boundaries, delivering to the world the universal message of compassion and benevolence—principles shared by all monotheistic faiths in Iran.
The ancient Mehregan Festival, rooted in the values of love and friendship and held in high regard by our ancestors, stands as a timeless symbol of Iranian goodwill and humanity. Like the sun, this festival radiates warmth and dispels darkness, embodying the spirit of light and unity inherent in Iranian culture. Now more than ever, Iran requires national cohesion to counter adversaries and showcase to the world a commitment to peace, tolerance, and justice while steadfastly opposing oppression.
I congratulate the global recognition of this cherished Iranian tradition, achieved through the dedication of cultural authorities.
May the Almighty, the eternal illuminator of the moon, Venus, and Mithra, bless Iran and its people with continued honor and prosperity.
