Magnum: 50 Years at the Front Line of History, authored by Russell Miller, has been translated into Persian by Shermin Nasiri, a member of the Amordad Photography Group, making it accessible to photography enthusiasts and students of the art.
The translation is the product of six years of dedicated research and effort, encompassing 13 main chapters. The concluding section—a directory featuring 283 portraits of the individuals mentioned in the book to help readers recognize them—was compiled by the translator herself.
Magnum Photos was founded by four photographers of diverse nationalities: Frenchman Henri Cartier-Bresson, Englishman George Roger, Pole David Seymour, and Hungarian André Friedman, better known as Robert Capa.
The book vividly recounts remarkable stories among these photographers, including their professional collaborations, personal relationships, debts, and other anecdotes.
Shermin Nasiri, the translator, told Amordad: “I have always felt it was essential to uncover the hidden or lesser-known aspects of photography. After extensive research, I realized there was no comprehensive source on the origin and development of Magnum. I reached out to the UK publisher, and fortunately, the proposal was warmly welcomed by both the author’s representative, Russell Miller, and the original publisher. Their support greatly strengthened my resolve to translate this work.”
Shermin Nasiri on the Legacy of Magnum and Her Work
Shermin Nasiri emphasizes that the key lesson from the Magnum cooperative is the power of solidarity despite diversity and differing ideas. The secret behind Magnum’s enduring success and its lasting appeal to photography enthusiasts and photojournalists lies in its founders’ early dedication: at a time when television, media, and cable networks were not yet widespread in Europe and the U.S., Magnum photographers traveled to critical regions around the world and transmitted their images so that leading publications could purchase and print them. This commitment ensured that Magnum would leave a permanent mark in the history of photography.
Russell Miller’s Magnum: 50 Years at the Front Line of History spans 448 pages and has been published in a limited edition of 200 copies by Dastur Press.
