Seyed Abbas Salehi, Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, emphasized in his congratulatory message on the global recognition of Mehregan that the ancient festival is founded on the principles of love and friendship.
According to the official website of the Ministry, Minister Salehi’s message was issued to mark Mehregan’s registration as an element of Iran’s intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee.
In his message, the minister stated:
In the name of God, the Source of Life and Wisdom,
The global recognition of Mehregan as part of Iran’s intangible cultural heritage reflects the richness and longevity of our nation’s culture. Iranian culture transcends geographical boundaries and conveys the enduring message of kindness and compassion of its people—values shared among all monotheistic faiths—to audiences around the world.
The ancient festival of Mehregan, rooted in love and friendship and highly valued by our ancestors, represents the warmth and kindness of the Iranian people, who, like the sun, illuminate darkness.
Now more than ever, Iran needs unity and national solidarity to counter the plans of adversaries and to show the world that Iranians, guided by compassion and a spirit of peace, engage with others with tolerance, while never abandoning justice, and resisting oppression.
I extend my heartfelt congratulations on the global recognition of this authentic Iranian tradition, a result of the dedicated efforts of cultural authorities and stakeholders. I pray to the Almighty and the God of the Shining Moon, Venus, and Mehr for the continued pride, prosperity, and honor of Iran and its people.
