A team of heritage enthusiasts, restoration specialists, and volunteers from Ardakan, together with participants from across Iran, have voluntarily carried out emergency restoration work on Khargoushi Castle in Ardakan, Yazd.
The project, organized by DAMA (Volunteers for the Revival of Iran’s Heritage) under the supervision of Mohsen Mirjani, aims to prevent further damage to this significant national monument. Ongoing restoration efforts include reinforcing wall foundations with stone plinths, laying brick floors with straw-lime mortar, applying straw-clay plaster on the roof to prevent moisture penetration, installing piles and braces on the outer walls, stabilizing and underpinning damaged stone walls, adjusting roof slopes, and fitting gutters to redirect surface water.
Khargoushi Castle, also known as Khargoushi Caravanserai, is located in the Aqda district of Ardakan County. This historical fortress, dating back to the Safavid period, was officially registered as a national heritage site in 1998 (1377 in the Iranian calendar).
