Samineh Baghchehban: A Lasting Voice for the Deaf

Samineh Baghchehban, renowned author of children’s and young adult literature and founder of educational and cultural programs for hearing-impaired and deaf children, has passed away at the age of 98. She was the daughter of Jabbar Baghcheban, a pioneer in deaf education in Iran.

Born on 4 Farvardin 1306 (March 24, 1927), Baghchehban graduated from the Higher Teachers’ College with a degree in English. She later received a scholarship to study in the United States, focusing on education for the deaf. Upon returning to Iran, she joined her father in teaching at a school for the deaf, dedicating her life to supporting children with hearing impairments.

Baghchehban earned a master’s degree in Deaf Education from Columbia University and also pursued studies in speech therapy at the same institution.

Among her enduring contributions to children’s literature are Wooden Sequins, Nowruz and Kites, and the folk song I Ran and I Ran, works that continue to inspire young readers across generations.
