A newly discovered Sassanian funerary stone, inscribed in Pahlavi script, has recently been found in the Khajeh Akasheh Mountains in the Abadeh district of Fars Province. This is said to be the first historical inscription uncovered in the city.
Arash Namiraniyan, a researcher and history enthusiast, informed Amordad about the discovery of this Middle Persian Sassanian inscription in Abadeh.
He explained that the inscription was identified in Farvardin 1403 (March-April 2024), adding, “After discovering the inscription, I brought the matter to the attention of the Abadeh Department of Cultural Heritage. In coordination with the Director of the Persepolis Museum and the Persepolis Inscriptions Research Center, it was decided that the necessary examinations would be carried out. Once the content is fully analyzed, the results will be shared with the public.”
He continued, “Fortunately, on Tuesday, 8th Ordibehesht of this year, we were able to complete the task. Together with Mojtaba Doroudi, an expert in ancient languages and cultures, and the Director of Cultural Heritage of Abadeh, we visited the site of the inscription and gathered all the necessary documentation.”
The researcher explained that the inscription references the construction of a tomb in the Khajeh Mountains, commissioned by an individual named Mehrzad. The language used in the inscription is particularly intriguing and worth reflecting on. The inscription reads: “This hidden place / in Hakush / Mehrzad (or Mitradad) / commanded the construction of the tomb.”
Namiraniyan concluded by saying: “A complete translation and a more detailed explanation of this inscription will be published as a scholarly article in the future.”
