World Theatre Day in Iran!

Theatre, as the most dynamic art form, has always championed human dignity, the value of thought, and the power of reason. It has continuously pursued the most ambitious and profound aspects of human nature to help build a joyful society—one that is free from oppression and founded on equality, justice, and freedom.

Rooted in philosophy and deep reflection, theatre has long been committed to shaping both the ideal human and the ideal society. Yet, throughout history, dedicated theatre artists have often faced disregard from those in power and suffered under the constraints of ideological rigidity.

But why do those in power fear intellectual theatre so much? Why do they attempt to strip it of its essence? The answer is clear: theatre thrives in direct connection with its audience—it is alive, vibrant, and reaches into the very soul of the spectator. It opens a window into their inner world, compelling them to reflect on where they stand, what they do, and who they aspire to become.

For this very reason, authoritarian forces seek to distance theatre from its deeply human essence, transforming it into something superficial, simplistic, and devoid of impact.

To those betraying humanity, one must say: What a misguided illusion! Throughout centuries, theatre has always been able to rise from the ruins you have created and the degradation you have subjected it to, staying vibrant, free-spirited, and dynamic in its mission to elevate humanity!

Though theatre is rooted in local culture and geography, it transcends these boundaries. It has stood firm throughout the ages, opposing oppressors and those who seek to stifle freedom. Therefore, theatre in our time faces difficult challenges.

On one side, a new wave of opportunists has entered the field, claiming to be advocates of private theatre, but in reality they establish their business by stealing art and the hard work of the artists. They work relentlessly to destroy pure theatre and impose strange and exploitative contracts, turning theatre artists into mere commodities for higher profits and professional prestige.

On the other side, the government, through the establishment of bureaucratic institutions and extravagant spending, disrupts the already weak and fragile economic cycle of theatre.

As we approach World Theatre Day, the livelihoods of people, including those in theatre, have become exceedingly difficult. The audience of theatre is preoccupied with securing basic needs such as food, clothing, rent, medication, and other essentials, while the government has withdrawn from its responsibilities. Instead, it takes a share of ticket sales or venue rentals, pocketing large sums from artists.

In this complex and harsh situation, the government has strengthened its censorship oversight role, ignoring any responsible support for real culture and art!

Instead of engaging in constructive dialogue with the hard-working artists in this invaluable profession, the deputy minister chooses to visit the graves of the dead, offering flowers to those buried in the cemetery. He pays respect to the dead and turns his back on the living artists, engaging in a pact with the deceased in the theatre world.

As we approach World Theatre Day, most theatre artists find themselves sidelined due to misguided policies. When they attempt to bring a performance to the stage, they are met with cold indifference and harsh opposition from those in power.

Our top theatre stages have become havens for opportunists, the inexperienced, and those with questionable financial backing, all claiming to revitalize box office sales. We know that, at best, they may bring in revenue, but they contribute little to the richness of ideas or the development of theatre.

As we mark World Theatre Day, we find ourselves in a situation where theatre has been reduced to a luxury or shallow entertainment. Those responsible for this state of affairs fail to realize that one day, theatre will rise like a phoenix from the ruins they have created, returning to its former glory!

We celebrate world theatre day, during the most challenging times of this art, while those in power turn a deaf ear to the legitimate voices of the theatre artists and focus solely on their own positions.

For as long as I can remember, we, the people of the theatre, have faced challenges with incompetent administrators, whether at the higher or mid-levels. However, I must acknowledge that we have never encountered a time like this before…

The government and its representatives at the Ministry of Culture have clearly expressed their disinterest in theatre. They’ve closed all communication channels with theatre professionals, the theatre budget is completely blocked, and censorship is more oppressive than ever. They cannot tolerate any criticism or even constructive feedback about their actions!

The exploitation of artists as humans, has turned into a deceitful practice for them.

But we, the dedicated and honorable members of the theatre community, will not sit idly by. We firmly believe that the future belongs to truth, and we will not stop fighting for truth, freedom, and democracy.

We have a responsibility to represent the vision, life, and actions of our time. We care deeply about culture, identity, and human values. The pioneers in this field have demonstrated with unwavering commitment that in challenging times, we must double our efforts and work even harder to solidify and preserve theatre!

Happy World Theatre Day to all the theatre creators!
