Discovery of settlement areas around Lake Urumia

The archaeological investigation of the Lake Urumia area (Chahar Borj city) led to the identification of settlement areas from the Bronze Age, the historical era, and the Islamic period.

According to Ilna’s report and according to the public relations of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, Reza Mehrabi, head of the archeology board, said: “Chahar Borj is one of the newly founded cities of West Azerbaijan province, which is located south of Lake Urmia. Due to its special geographical location and a remarkable natural landscape, the area under study has high capability in the formation and cultural expansion of prehistoric and historic societies. But, unfortunately methodical identification and archeological investigation has not been done, and from the point of view of archeological research, the region is little known.”

Mehrabi added: “In this regard a delegation from the General Department of Cultural Heritage of West Azarbaijan province was sent to this area with the official permit of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, to study the region with an archeological approach. Mehrabi stated: “The above project was carried out to identify the extent of settlement and clarify the relative chronology of the region, describing the position of the investigated region in the archaeological research of the northwest area and providing a map of the distribution of the artifacts to complete the archeological map of the country.”

Pointing out that the area under investigation is a flat plain with a span of nearly 310 square kilometers, which was investigated with an intensive method of survey, he said: “12 areas of settlement were identified from the bronze age, the historical era (Parthian and Sassanid), and the Islamic era.”
