Following the excavations of Mersinchal Cemetery, the first Parthian tombstone was found, a remnant of the Parthian period, and was handed over to the Archaeological Museum of Semnan Province.
According to ILNA, Ata Hassanpour, the head of the archeology group, said that the rescue excavations of Mersinchal cemetery in the catchment area of the Finsk dam were carried out in two stages.
The archaeologist described the Mersin Chal cemetery as a site from the Parthian period with numerous tombs, which passed its third season of excavation in Mehr 1400.
Hassanpour pointed out that in the excavations carried out in the third chapter. In two phases, 68 graves of the type of hole graves were discovered in this area: Burial in these graves was done in a subline form (laid on the back) and towards the east-west direction.
He added: “The graves of Mersin Chal Cemetery have numerous relics from the Parthian period that were placed next to the dead for afterlife use.”
Head of the archeological group for rescue excavations of Mersin Chal Cemetery said that one of the most important rare finds in the archeological excavations of the historical period in Iran was the discovery of a carved tombstone in Mersin Chal Cemetery, which was found in grave number 39.
The archaeologist noted that the tombstone is located vertically above the deceased’s head: the height of the tombstone is 52 cm, its width is 38 cm, and its thickness is 7 cm.
Hassanpour said: “On this tombstone, the image of a horse and a rider standing in front of a tree is drawn, and it is engraved on a smooth limestone stone in a taping or stumping manner with shallow depth.”
Head of the archeological group for the rescue excavations of Mersin Chal Cemetery pointed out that no specimen of this tombstone from the Parthian period has been reported in Iran so far: This tombstone was registered under number 156 and handed over to the Archaeological Museum of Semnan province.
