Naser Taghvai, Prominent Iranian Filmmaker, Passed Away

Naser Taghvai, the acclaimed Iranian filmmaker and writer, passed away today, 22 Mehr 1404 (October 13, 2025), in Tehran at the age of 84.

His wife, Marzieh Vafamehr, announced his death on social media, writing in tribute:
“Naser Taghvai was an artist who embraced the challenge of living freely and achieved true liberation. Let us remember his journey. He loved plants—let us plant a tree in his memory. He loved light—let us light a candle for him. He loved white clothing—let us wear white to honor him. He loved literature—let us read. He loved cinema—let us watch films in his memory.
We should celebrate him through music and art, and nothing else. May his path inspire many.”

Born on 22 Tir 1320 (July 13, 1941) in Abadan, Taghvai is known for landmark works including Nakhoda Khorshid, Ey Iran, Kaghaz-e Bi-Khat, and the TV series Dai Jan Napoleon. He was a pioneer of the Iranian New Wave cinema.

After the Iranian Revolution, Taghvayi reduced his output in protest against censorship.
