57th death anniversary of Gholamreza Takhti, the iconic Iranian wrestler, was commemorated on Tuesday, 17 Dey 1403 (January 7, 2025), at his grave in Ibn Baboye Cemetery, Shahr-e Rey. The ceremony was attended by athletes, sports veterans, officials, family members, and fans.
Takhti, born on Shahrivar 5, 1338 (September 1, 1930), in Tehran’s Khaniabad neighborhood, began his wrestling career at the age of 20 under the mentorship of Habibollah Bolour at Poulad Club.
Throughout his career, Takhti won the national wrestling championship eight times from 1329 to 1338 (1950 to 1959). He was also named Iran’s champion three times and earned a silver medal at the 1951 Helsinki World Championships in the 79 kg weight class during his first international appearance. In his Olympic debut at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, Takhti secured a silver medal after being defeated by Kouridze from the Soviet Union.
Takhti passed away on Dey 17, 1346 (January 7, 1967), at the former Atlantic Hotel, when his son Babak was only four months old.
His legacy will forever be remembered.
