Festival of meatless foods on Bahman day in Jamshid Jam primary school

Bahmangan was celebrated in Jamshid Jam boys’ primary school, together with “meatless food festival”.

The celebration started with prayer and the reading of Gatha, performed by sixth-grade students Radin Rostami and Mehrsam Khosravi. Parviz Mehrshahi spoke about Bahmangan. The students of the first grade each read a couplet from Rumi. Noushin Pashutan, the school principal, thanked the charitable donors for their help during the present school year. On occasion of Bahmangan, students of each of the 6 grades prepared meatless dishes as a symbol of protecting beneficial animals on this day (Bahman roj is one of the 4 days on which meat is not eaten). The food was wrapped in the school and distributed among the students. This memorable event was held by the teachers/parent’s association.

Bahmangan festival:  Based on the Ancient Iranian calendar, in which the 12 months of the year each had 30 days, the 2nd day, named Bahman, of the month of Bahman (11th month), which in the official calendar of the country, falls on 26th Day, is celebrated according to an ancient tradition, to protect beneficial animals. According to the old tradition and to protect the beneficial cattle, Zoroastrians refrain from slaughtering animals and eating meat for four days every month. These four days in Zoroastrian chronology (Wahman, Mah, Gosh, and Ram) are called “Nabor” or “abstaining from eating meat.”

Jamshidjam Primary School, one of the six schools of the Zoroastrian Association of Tehran, was founded in 1285 (1905 AD) and has sent many graduates to high school. It currently accepts Zoroastrian boys from the first to the 6th grades.
