About the prehistoric and historic cultures in the South Zagros valleys

Lehsovare cemetery was archaeologically explored

Archeological exploration of the Lehsovare cemetery in Khorasan riverbed was carried out in order to gain knowledge about the prehistoric and historical cultures of the southern Zagros valleys.

According to Ilna’s report and the public relations of Cultural Heritage and Tourism Research Institute, Alireza Sardari, head of the excavation group, said: Lehsovare cemetery is located in Dana city of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province on the banks of Bashar and Khorasan rivers. Objects from the end of the 2nd millennium and the beginning of the 1st millennium BC have been revealed.

A scientific staff member of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism added: This ancient area was excavated with the purpose of obtaining knowledge of the prehistoric and historical cultures of the South Zagros valleys.

According to Sardari, this research was carried out in graves with human burial remains and metal artifacts such as weapons and ornaments made of silver, bronze, and iron.

Head of the excavation group stated that in addition to the above a number of pottery and clay vessels were also found in them and added: “The findings and the objects obtained are well worth comparing with the cultural materials of the Elamite civilization that existed in Khuzestan, Fars and Zagros.”

The members of the scientific board of the research institute of cultural heritage and tourism added: On the other hand, works similar to the civilizations of the East and South-East of Iran have also been identified, which may show the connection and cultural interactions with these societies.

This archeologist called the narrow and high valleys of the Bashar and Khorasan rivers one of the settlements of the mountain communities in Zagros, whose history dates back to the Neolithic era and the 6th millennium BC. He continued: In addition to this cemetery, other areas and cemeteries such as Lema and Dehpayin have been explored in this region, which provides similar works and documents related to a common ancient culture from the 3rd to the 1st millennium BC.

The archeologist stated that the number of such cemeteries in this region, despite the rarity of settlement areas and residential hills, can be evidence of the nomadic pastoralists who seasonally lived part of the year in these valleys. There, such a hypothesis can be proved with detail surveys and investigations in this area.
