Mobedyar Pariya Mavandi talks about Shahnameh Narration

Mobedyar Pariya Mavandi, a reciter and Shahnameh scholar, spoke about creation in the Shahnameh during a Shahnameh narration program, in which the young narrator, Arina Irani, member of the Zoroastrian Shahnameh khani group, performed on the Shahnameh.

At the beginning of the conversation Mobedyar Pariya Mavandi spoke about the Shahname that was written in prose by Abu Mansour Mohammad Ibn Abdul Razzaq, in which he wrote the epics of ancient times, and after him Daghighi continued this work by carefully organizing Abu Mansour’s Shahnameh and writing it in verse. Then, a “kind friend” handed over this great Pahlavi epic of Abu Mansour to Ferdowsi Toosi.  And thus, Ferdowsi started writing the Shahnameh. There were scribes in those days who took hand notes from the legends that were told from mouth-to-mouth and in this way made handwritten copies of the shahnameh, and in the course of this work took great lessons from Ferdowsi. Sometimes narrators would copy the shahnameh in handwriting, and would add stories they heard, in more details, to the Shahnameh. For instance, the verse “this world will go on turning and we will be gone; nothing but …” which is in the story of Rostam and Esfandiar, is believed by Dr Khaleghi Motlagh to have been added. She gave this example to say that whoever has composed this verse has indirectly learned a great deal from Ferdowsi.

In continuation, she spoke about the Shahnameh revisions, for example, the “Jules Mohl” edition, the Mosco edition and the revision of Khaleghi Motlagh, and that the most up-dated revision is by Dr Mehri Behfar. In parts of her interview, this shahnameh researcher brought up some points about creation as written in the Shahnameh: creation (of the universe and humans) and creation of the first human type, named Kyoumars. She also spoke about the man and woman “Mashi and Mashiyaneh” (adam and Eve). She continued by explaining about the different stages of the world’s creation, the six chahreh of gahanbar, which Zoroastrian of Iran believe to be the six days in which God created the world. In another part of the program Mobedyar Pariya Mavandi, the first Zoroastrian lady narrator of the Shahnameh, spoke about the Zoroastrian group of Shahnameh narrators and also about classes in shahnameh that she is conducting, and added: These classes consist of all age groups, including children, juniors and youth from Iran, and elsewhere.

In this teaching class the first point that is taught to the students is that learning about the Shahnameh is to receive moral advice and apply it in life.  The method of teaching the Shahnameh in this Shahnameh-khani group is such that in addition to learning how to narrate the stories, focus is put on the verses and their meaning.

This live conversation, the second of the three programs of the Atlas Genesis Institute, was held online on the evening of Monday, September 12, 2022, at 9:00 PM, with the speech of Mobedyar Pariya Mavandi. Parts of the program were accompanied by reading verses from the Shahnameh containing moral advice. The guest of this program, Arina Irani, a young naqal, a naqal student under the tutelage of Mobedyar Priya Mavandi, narrated the story of Kyoumars after the creation of Adam and was applauded. Since the age of six, Arina has joined the Zoroastrian Zoroastrians’ Shahnameh recitation and Shahnameh reading group and has continued this path with interest and perseverance and has earned status and honor. In the third program of these series, which will be held the following Monday, in the presence of Mobedyar Pariya Mavandi, her young student, Vista Bolandi, one of the members of the Zoroastrian Shahnameh-khani group, will give a performance on the Shahnameh.
