Now, with the support of Shahbazi’s family and through the efforts of Dr. Nazila Shahbazi, his sister, Rodabeh Shahbazi, his daughter, and Mohsen Shahbazi, his brother, the book has been republished in Winter 2024 (1403 SH) by Morvarid Publishing. It is once again available to enthusiasts of ancient Iranian history, as well as writers and researchers.

The book focuses on the distinguished Achaemenid prince, the young Cyrus, brother of Artaxerxes II. In this pioneering work, Professor Shahbazi introduces readers to the life of one of the great figures of the Achaemenid era. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of ancient Iranian history, particularly the glorious Achaemenid period, Shahbazi skillfully sheds light on the lesser-known aspects of this prince’s life.

Through meticulous research and careful analysis, Shahbazi explores the prince’s life from multiple perspectives. This is a figure who, had fate been kinder, could have altered the course of Iranian history, revived the splendor of the eras of Darius and Cyrus the Great and shaping Iran’s destiny.

Beyond Xenophon’s writings and scattered references by Herodotus and a few other historians, little is known about young Cyrus, brother of Artaxerxes II. For the first time, Professor Shapur Shahbazi uncovers the secrets of this remarkable and free-spirited Iranian figure, giving readers a detailed glimpse into his life and legacy.

Although this book is primarily the biography of the young (or lesser) Cyrus, who died around 401 BCE, it can also be regarded as a broader history of Iran in the fifth century BCE. It narrates the events of that period, the political intrigues among its leaders, and the motivations that ultimately led to Cyrus’s military campaigns and his untimely death.

The main purpose of the book is to shed light on a chapter of Iranian history, showcasing the efforts of the country’s heroes to safeguard their ancestral heritage, while also exploring the thoughts and actions of one of Iran’s most dynamic and worldly figures.

The author, Professor Shapur Shahbazi (1942–2006), was a distinguished archaeologist and historian, and a revered professor of ancient Iranian history in Iran, Germany, and the United States.

Upon learning of his passing, the prominent Iranian scholar and bibliographer Iraj Afshar wrote:
“ Shahbazi was one of Iran’s foremost scholars, with deep knowledge of ancient Iran, particularly the Achaemenid period. He combined field experience with a global perspective and comprehensive understanding of that era.”

The book A Achaemenid Prince has been published in nine chapters, plus an appendix and a concluding section, covering the following:

The Rise and Fall of the Achaemenid Empire

Prince Cyrus and His Era

Iran and the Peloponnesian Wars

Cyrus’s Military Leadership

Turning Points in History

The Rule of Cyrus the Lion-Hearted

Mobilizing the Army

Cyrus’s Military Campaigns

The Battle of Cunaxa (September 7, 401 BCE)

The book concludes with a final note and a list of sources extracted by the author.

A brief excerpt from the book reads:

*”Such was the story of Prince Cyrus of the Achaemenid dynasty — a young man who lived with courage and honor, worthy of the great name he bore. His life was filled with valor and dignity, and his death was equally brave and glorious.

According to Xenophon, those who saw or knew him considered him the most fitting successor to Cyrus the Great. Even as a child, he exhibited bravery, loyalty, purity, and princely wisdom. Greatness suited him, and his royal qualities shone forth.

By confronting dangers and accomplishing difficult tasks, he became renowned, excelling in both leadership and military command. In loyalty, devotion, and friendship, he had no equal. Anyone who met him — whether Iranian, Egyptian, Greek, or Syracusan — wished to serve him and dedicate their lives to his cause.”*

The esteemed book A Achaemenid Prince by Shapur Shahbazi spans 186 pages and has been published by Morvarid Publishing, priced at 220,000 Tomans.

This work is particularly valuable for writers, researchers, and scholars focused on ancient Iran, offering essential insights and historical perspectives.

The valuable and unique book, A Achaemenid Prince, written by the late Professor Shapur Shahbazi, has been reprinted after 5 decades.
