The abundant palm groves and great masters of this city are genuinely unique in weaving wicker handicrafts. This is not easy and requires special skill. It is interesting to know that some women who weave names on the fans are not literate; by having the design of the letters in front of them (like a carpet design) they weave the desired name on the straw fan.

The reason why this fan of Bafq is called the named fan is because, as we said earlier, the women weave the name on the fan, either on the request of the buyer or according to their own taste. Such fans, which have a name and a mark, were used to identify commercial goods of Bafq merchants, in the past. The merchants would put named fans on their goods in order to distinguish them from goods of other places.

Of course, fan-making is popular in other cities and villages in Iran, and it is not unique to Bafq. Wherever there are palm trees, products are woven that are made from the leaves of those palm trees. The best palm trees for producing straw crafts. Especially that the weavers use art and creativity when weaving the fans.

The history of fan weaving in Bafq (and named fans) is very old. There is evidence found that take back this craft to ancient times in Iran. This is another document showing the age of this historic product and named fans in this area.

When weaving these fans, the weavers of Bafq use colored leaves on alternate rows. In the row where the name is woven the colored leaves are used. Sometimes the weaver may want to weave a few words, instead of just a name, like, “welcome” or any other phrase.

In Bafq, 12 different types of fans are woven out of which the named fan is one of them. The names of some other fans are cleaning fans, dome fans, ax fans, fan with a stick as handle, etc.

There is a reason that Bafq is called the city of straw handicraft.
