With current advances in the study of human bones, such as ancient genetics and chemical analysis, it provides a way to understand complex social relationships and population displacements.

The main purpose of studying cemeteries is to find out about disease, migration and displacement, health, nutrition, gender, status, and network of social relations, which together with the help of these cases, we can get a picture of the people’s daily life in the past.

If and when the importance of the historical identity of historic cemeteries is realized, the tourism industry can flourish, and a new concept can be given to the tourism industry. Before examining these graves, let us have a brief look at the history of Lorestan.

The name “Lor” in historic texts of post-Arab invasion of Iran first appears in the fourth century (lunar calendar), in the form of the words Al-Lorieh, Larieh, Balad Al-Lor, and Lorieh in surviving texts of that period.

Before the arrival of the Medes, the inhabitants of Lorestan were tribes such as the Cassians, Ellipians, Lulubians, and Elamites. Lorestan, as part of Iran, has witnessed migration of Aryan tribes. After entering the Zagros area, the Medes people could influence the tribes living there, namely, the Cassian, Ellipians, Lulubians, Elamites, and other Asian tribes, and spread their Persian language in the region.

Lorestan region after the Arab invasion of Iran was also known by various names such as Jabal, Lor Kuchak, Pishkuh, and Lorestan Fili.

Lorestan, meaning the land of the Lor people, is the name of the lands where the Lor tribes settled. The borders of Lorestan can be determined from the western plains of Khanaqin and Mendali in Iraq to the Arjan plain in Fars province in Iran and from the north of Hamedan province to the shores of the Persian Gulf. The name of Lorestan before the Safavid rule also included the settlement of the Bakhtiari Lors, the Kohgiluyeh Lors, and the Boyer-Ahmad Lors. After the Safavid rule, the settlement of the Bakhtiari Lors was registered in the Bakhtiari region, and the geography of the Lorestan name was limited to the borders of present-day Lorestan and Ilam provinces. This region was also divided into “Poshtkuh” and “Pishkuh” during the Qajar rule.

Historical cemeteries belonging to the pre-Elamite period upto the reign of the first King of Pahlavi dynasty, have been registered nationally. In history this area was located on the west of the land of the Parsians. Unfortunately, the graves in this area have been neglected in the past 10 years by the Cultural Heritage officials of this province, and their stones are being destroyed or stolen every day.

The historical cemeteries of Lorestan, like other historical cemeteries in Iran, are of great importance and have helped to reveal the historical mysteries of the past inhabitants of this land.

Photos by Mahdi Biranvand Rozhman

Historical cemeteries are part of the important heritage and historical identity of the people of each land and are attractive places for tourists in tourist countries.
