Celebrating the Ancient Gahambar Festival at the Zoroastrian Association of Washington State

The Zoroastrian Association of Washington State recently held the Gahambar Maidh-yo-shema ceremony with participation from community members.

The event took place on the evening of Saturday, June 28, 2025 (7 Tir 1404 in the Persian calendar) at the association’s center.

The Maidh-yo-shema Gahambar occurs between Khur day and Day Be Mehr day in the month of Tir according to the Zoroastrian calendar, corresponding to July 29 to August 2 (8 to 12 Tir) in the Persian calendar. In Avestan, “Maidh-yo” means “middle” and “shema” means “summer.” This Gahambar is held in the middle of the seven-month-long great summer and marks the creation of water according to Zoroastrian tradition.
