Artistic Calligraphy in a Cold Corridor: A Review of Kamel Gholipour’s Exhibition

A display of calligraphy by Kamel Gholipour is currently being held at the Faculty of Literature at the University of Tehran. The artist’s pieces feature a blend of ancient and contemporary writings presented in an exquisite calligraphic style.

The exhibition consists of a few scattered works, displayed in the entrance hall of the Faculty of Literature. Given the moderate publicity surrounding the event, one might have expected the pieces to be shown in a more fitting environment, rather than in a corridor that attracts little attention. This setup gives the impression that the exhibition was not curated with the necessary care to meet artistic standards.

Most students, focused on reaching their classes, rush past the works without taking the time to appreciate the vibrant beauty of the calligraphy or reflect on the meaningful texts. Among the few visitors who noticed, there is a valid concern about why such captivating Iranian calligraphy has been placed in a hallway with no effort made to properly curate the exhibition.

A Renowned Calligraphy Artist

Kamel Gholipour is a well-known figure in the world of calligraphy, and his works are familiar to art enthusiasts. His book “Kamel Gholipour’s Calligrahy” (2022, Manangar Press), introduces his artistry. The book was launched in Shahrivar 1402 (2023) at the Sokhan-Gostaran Sabzmanesh Foundation, with the support of the Iranian Literary Association, giving calligraphy lovers a chance to discover his work.

The exhibition, “Calligraphy Works by Master Kamel Gholipour: Inspired by Classical and Contemporary Poets”, opened on December 20, 2023, and ran until the end of the month, despite a temporary closure due to air pollution. Organized by the Encyclopedia of Iranian Studies, the Association for the Integration of Iranian Civilization Heritage, and the University of Tehran’s Faculty of Literature and Humanities, the exhibition welcomed the public, including students and art lovers.

The Beauty of Gholipour’s Calligraphy

Gholipour is one of the key figures preserving and advancing Iranian calligraphy. His exhibition showcases not only his skill but also the poetry of classical and modern Iranian poets. His works include intricate, interwoven lines that create visually stunning backgrounds. One notable piece expresses his patriotism with the phrase, “O Ancient Border of Iran, the Persian Gulf.”

Each piece reflects Gholipour’s careful selection and craftsmanship, offering viewers both aesthetic beauty and meaningful depth. His exhibition is a must-see for any calligraphy lover, providing a glimpse into the world of Iranian calligraphy and leaving a lasting impression.
