Dr Negar Khodadadi’s speech at a meeting of the Zoroastrian Women’s Organization

Tehran Zoroastrian Women’s Organization hosted fellow believers in the Dey meeting with Dr. Negar Khodadadi’s speech on “Being powerful and calm in life’s journey”.

In this meeting Dr Negar Khodadadi, a neuropsychologist, reviewed the “phenomenon of loss” as one of life’s down moments. Referring to the various stages of facing this problem, she spoke about the methods of overcoming life’s ups and downs and reducing tension.

Life is full of ups and downs, and we must prepare ourselves to face them. One of the down moments of life is loss: loss of relatives and friends, migration of children, loss of health, etc., when dealing with this phenomenon, people prefer to deny it. This is why many of us do not take sickness or its complications seriously. After passing through the stage of disbelief, we reach anger. We ask ourselves why I should lose our loved ones or abilities. At this stage, we think that we are wronged and so we get angry.

Once we get past the anger stage, we start bargaining. If I had taken more care, this would not have happened, and so on. In the next stage, we start grieving, and sometimes depression comes over us, which then requires treatment. After paving these steps we finally come to acceptance. Knowing these steps will help us to understand where we are on the path to bearing with grief (loss) and how to help ourselves and our loved ones to get past this stage and face this phenomenon more wisely. Methods such as muscle relaxation, deep breathing, proper sleep and food, and keep in touch with peers and friends will help to reduce the tension arising from this path. One of the ways to deal with grief and loss is to find our beliefs and perspectives that affect this phenomenon. By revising these beliefs, we can be more potent against life’s setbacks.
