Tabas Geopark became Global

Tabas Geopark was registered as Iran’s third global geopark after Qeshm Geopark and Ares Geopark.

According to the ISNA report, Nazanin Badri, the head of geological heritage research and geopark studies of the Geological and Mineral Exploration Organization of the country, referring to the registration of Tabas Geopark, said: Tabas Geopark as the third global geopark of Iran, received the favorable vote of the Supreme Council of UNESCO World Geoparks. The decision to enforce the Tabas Geopark will be issued after the approval of the UNESCO executive board in the spring of next year.

Nazanin Badri added: “The application file for the Tabas Geopark membership was sent to UNESCO in Azar 1400, after nearly five years of preparatory activities and the implementation of protection infrastructure preparation operations, interpretation in the Geosits and training for the empowerment of local communities.”

Recalling that in Shahrivar 1401, two international evaluators from UNESCO traveled to Tabas for the final visit to the region and Geositses, she said: In the meeting of the Supreme Council of UNESCO World Geoparks on Azar 17, 1401, with the decisive vote of all council members in the forum, the UNESCO green card was received for this geopark.

The person in charge of geological heritage research and geopark studies of the country’s Geological and Mineral Exploration Organization reminded: In 1388, this organization proposed 20 areas with the potential for setting up national and international geoparks in the Atlas of Geopark and Geotourism capabilities of Iran in 2008. In 1396, this number reached 32 priority areas for introducing global geoparks in Iran.

According to her, Tabas and Aras were among the regions recognized for the first time as priority regions of the global geopark by the country’s Geological and Mineral Exploration Organization.
