Molavi Mohammad Sadegh Akef Mohajer, a spokesman for the Taliban’s Ministry of Defense, told a private media outlet that “we have only two Eids in Islam: the Eid al-Fitr and the Eid al-Adha. “There is no other Eid called Nowruz in Islam,” he added. “Nowruz is reserved for the Zoroastrians, and I do not see the need to celebrate Nowruz.”
He said whether the three Nowruz holidays would be observed next year: “It remains to be seen what decision the Department of Labor and Social Affairs will make, but it is unlikely that these three days will be holidays.”
Meanwhile, the Taliban municipality in Mazar-i-Sharif announced that the organization would hold the annual Nowruz celebration in the city.
