Screen play of a story by Hovannes Tumanian, a prominent Armenian novelist, “This is the 30th year of diplomatic relations between Iran and Armenia, and I am glad that one of my country’s neighbors is Iran”, said Narineh Grigorian, who has participated in the 40th Fajr International Theater Festival with her play “Sako from Loretsi.”
“Sako from Loretsi” is the name of a play based on a text by Hovhannes Toumanian, a prominent Armenian poet, novelist, and literary and social activist, directed by Narine Grigorian from Armenia at the 40th Fajr International Theater Festival.
Narine Grigorian spoke about the content of this play: “I have shown what we give to our children and instead what we take away from them; The horror stories we tell our children, the horror movies we show them that we may not see the result of right away, but when they grow up they will feel the consequences. All in all, I show the violence that we teach our children from childhood. This play shows how fear slowly penetrates our souls, and the results become apparent over time. I have tried to show this problem in different ways.
The director from Armenia explained why she used the writing from Hovannes Tumanian: “This year is the 150th birth anniversary of Hovannes tumanian, and the idea to start this work was born when I was watching a movie in Ukraine, from Nikolai Gogol. Gogol has a story about goblins, and when I watched it on the screen I remembered that we too in Armenia have such stories that create such an atmosphere of fear, horror and shadows. There, the idea of this play was born for me.
At the end of her speech Gregorian said: “This is the 30th year of the diplomatic relations between Iran and Armenia, and I am delighted that one of our neighbors is Iran, and I am happy that we have such a neighbor.”
Narineh Gregorian had come to Iran in 2015 for the 30th Fajr International Theatre Festival with her play “Flying over the city”. She talked about the time the play “Sako from Loretsi” was produced: “The play Sako from Loretsi was made in 2019, but Unfortunately, Corona started from that time and did not allow us to travel. As a result, this is the first international trip of our show, and after Iran, we will go to Russia and Ukraine because I would like to leave it to the judgment of foreign audiences.
